Pelican in Flight on the Deschutes River, Wingtips UP
An American Pelican gently gliding along the Deschutes River on a dreary January day. His feathers are so white and bright against the dark winter background as he soars only a foot or two above the river. In this image, his wingtips are up, but they barely moved as he flew along the river.

Pelicans have gradually moved west across the Columbia. My first sightings were at the John Day Dam, then The Dalles dam and this past summer they were near Hood River.
