Western Gray Squirrel Portrait

from $4.50

Portrait of a Western Gray Squirrel as he climbs a tree at Soda Springs Recreation Area in Klickitat County. This is among my favorite images of this sweet tree squirrel. In 2023 WDFW moved the status of this squirrel up, from the ‘Threatened’ to ‘Endangered’ list. I am honored they used my habitat image for the cover of the Periodic Status Review.

Western Gray Squirrels are on the ‘Threatened’ list in Washington State while just across the Columbia River in Oregon, they’re abundant. We have one of three WGS population pockets in the entire state of Washington in Klickitat County. They’re larger than the Douglas Squirrel, our other tree squirrel and have a very long bushy tail. In sunlight, their silvery gray fur glimmers. Distinguished from California Ground Squirrels by their creamy white chest and belly.
